What We Hear in Gurgaon Living Rooms is the Conversation Pikova Was Built For

A direct account of the conversations that shaped why we built this brand the way we did.

We did not start Pikova from a market analysis. We started it from a series of living rooms.

Over the last two years, in the residential societies of Gurgaon, the ones in Sector 50, in DLF Phase 5, on Golf Course Extension Road, on Sohna Road, in Gwal Pahari,  we sat in homes and listened. We attended a number of residents' association meetings, with permission. We spoke to homemakers, founders, returning Indians, retired senior leaders, doctors, designers, and a handful of children who had strong opinions about which water they would and would not drink at school. From those conversations, a brand took shape. This is, in some sense, that brand. This article is a record of what we heard, and why we built Pikova the way we did.

What we heard, in their words

The phrases varied, but the underlying observation was the same in nearly every home.

'I know where my coffee is from. I know where my ghee is from. I have no idea where my water is from.' This was the most common single sentence, paraphrased differently in every household. 'The RO has been here for years. We don't think about it.' A statement of fact, said without defensiveness, but always with a small pause afterwards. The pause was the seed of the conversation.

'My mother told me the water in our village had a taste. I have never tasted that taste in my ownhome.' This came up in many homes, particularly with first-generation urban Indians whose families still hold some rural geography. The taste of geography in water is a real memory.

'I have started reading labels on bottled water. They don't tell me anything.' This was the moment in many conversations where the consumer realised that the category had not been built to answer source-led questions, even when the consumer had finally arrived ready to ask them.

'The jar from the supplier looks the same every time. Is it the same jar?' The format question, which most water brands have not yet engaged with seriously, comes up faster than people in the industry expect.

What we noticed about the household

Three things stood out.

Your kitchen is already exceptional. The oil is cold-pressed, the salt is unrefined, the bread is sourdough, the coffee is single origin. Every choice was made with care. Water wasn’t overlooked because you didn’t care. It was overlooked because the category never asked you to care.

The household was ready, almost immediately, to take the water question seriously the moment it was framed properly. Once a conversation got to the difference between sourced and treated water, the household understood within minutes. The cognitive infrastructure was already in place. Thecategory had simply not been giving it material to work with. The household preferred subtlety. The right brand of water, in the right kind of jar, served the right way, on a table set with the right care, was understood instantly. The wrong volume, loud branding, exaggerated claims, glossy advertising did not survive contact with these living rooms. The household had sophisticated filters for what counted as serious.

What we built for, as a result

We built Pikova specifically for this household. Every operational choice we made was informed by what we had heard.

We chose to source from a Himalayan aquifer, named specifically, at a stated depth of more than 250 feet.We chose to publish the composition in full that is calcium 32-45 mg/L, magnesium 5-7 mg/L,bicarbonates 130-160 mg/L, natural pH 7.8-8, TDS 240-280 mg/L because the household wanted the numbers, and we believed the household had earned them. We chose to bottle at source rather than ship raw water and bottle it elsewhere. We chose to use only sedimentary filtration so we did not strip the mineral composition that the source had built over decades. We chose a strict non-reusable model(NRM) on our 20-litre jars so the household never received a vessel that had been chemically hard washed and refilled an indeterminate number of times. We chose a closed-loop recovery process so the household did not have to feel that environmental responsibility was the brand's marketing line rather than its operational reality. We chose to keep our brand voice calm, our visuals editorial rather than glossy, and our communication unhurried because we had observed what the household responded to, and what it instinctively distrusted.

What the household tells us, once they have switched

In our early tastings, the response has been consistent. The first reaction is quiet. The household pauses after the first sip. Someone says, "this is different." Someone else says, "my body feels something." At one tasting, a senior family member said simply, "this is what good water remembers feeling like."

Manufacturing is complete. The brand launch is weeks away, followed by the product launch. But the response has already told us what we needed to know. The product we built is the product households have been waiting for. We didn’t have to convince anyone. We just had to show up with it.

What we expect in the next twelve months

We expect to grow slowly, by household and by society. We expect the Gurgaon residents'association partnerships to be the early backbone of our distribution. We expect word of mouth between neighbours to do most of the work that paid acquisition would otherwise do. We expect the brand to feel, by the end of the year, like something the community has chosen for itself rather than something a marketing department pushed on it. Pikova is being built the way the household wanted a water brand to be built. Quiet. Honest.Source-led. Mineral-intact. Format-disciplined. Delivered with dignity. Twenty years late to the conversation, but right on time for the household that is finally having it.
