Vantara has issued an official statement regarding the relocation of temple elephant Madhuri (also known as Mahadevi), clarifying that it acted solely on the binding directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court and Bombay High Court. The organisation stated, “We recognise and respect the sentiments of the devotees, the leadership of the Jain Matha, and the wider community who have expressed their concerns and attachment to Madhuri's presence in Kolhapur.” Vantara reiterated that it did not initiate or recommend the relocation and had no intent to interfere with religious sentiment.
The statement went on to affirm Vantara’s full support for any application made by the Jain Matha and the Government of Maharashtra to the court requesting Madhuri’s return to Kolhapur. “Subject to the Court's approval, Vantara will provide complete technical and veterinary assistance for her safe and dignified return.”
As a constructive step forward, Vantara has proposed the development of a satellite rehabilitation centre for Madhuri in the Nandani area of Kolhapur, to be created in partnership with the State Government and the Jain Matha. “The proposed facility will be developed in accordance with the established animal welfare guidelines, after consultation with experts from the High-Powered Committee and consensus of the Matha, while aligned to international best practices in elephant care.”
