From Engineering Dams to Navigating Market Storms: A Candid Conversation with Er. Sudhir Kumar Sahu, the Mind Behind 22 Amazon Bestsellers”

In a world brimming with financial noise and fleeting stock tips, rare are those who offer grounded wisdom rooted in decades of real-world experience. Er. Sudhir Kumar Sahu is one such voice. An accomplished Civil Engineer who has served more than 30 years in the Water Resources Department of Odisha, he currently holds the post of Additional Chief Engineer at the Hirakud Dam Circle, Burla—home to the World’s Longest Earthen Dam. Yet, beyond engineering marvels and water management, Er. Sahu has quietly and powerfully emerged as an internationally recognized financial author with 20 stock market books available on Amazon.com and Amazon.in, read and appreciated in 13 countries.

We sat down with Er. Sudhir Kumar Sahu for a no-holds-barred conversation about his journey, discipline, financial literacy, and the story behind his dual success in engineering and finance.

Q: From Hirakud Dam to Amazon bestsellers—this is a rare career arc. How did the journey begin?

Er. Sahu: It’s been an interesting evolution. I started as an Assistant Engineer in 1994. Over time, while being deeply involved in various Water Resources Projects, I realized the importance of personal finance. I was always disciplined with money. Eventually, I began studying the stock market out of curiosity. What began as a hobby turned into a passion &  mission—to help others navigate the risks of the stock market with logic, not emotions.

Q: You mentioned risk. Many consider the stock market to be a gamble. What’s your perspective?

Er. Sahu: It is risky, no doubt. But so is driving on the highway. The difference lies in understanding the rules and following them. My core message, which I reinforce in all my books, is simple: Don’t be emotional with fear, greed, or hope. Use stop-loss religiously, cut your losses early, and ride your profits with a trailing stop-loss. Use indicators to align with the trends of market. These are not just strategies—they're principles of survival in the market.

Q: Your books have gained attention in 13 countries. That’s no small feat. Why do you think your work resonates globally?

Er. Sahu: Because the principles of risk and discipline are universal. Whether you’re investing in India, the US, Germany, or Australia, the psychology of trading remains the same. I present concepts in a relatable way, drawn from real experiences, not theoretical jargon. That authenticity seems to strike a chord with readers worldwide.

Q: Tell us about your dual identity—as a Civil Engineer and a Financial Author. How do you balance them?

Er. Sahu: It’s all about time management and passion. My work with the Water Resources Department—especially at the Hirakud Dam—has shaped my analytical mind. Civil Engineering teaches you to evaluate, forecast, and control variables. Investing requires similar thinking. The disciplines aren’t separate. In fact, they complement each other. One deals with managing water; the other with managing risk & wealth.

Q: That’s a powerful analogy. You’re also a life member of over 15 professional engineering organizations. How does this technical side influence your financial teachings?

Er. Sahu: It reinforces my commitment to precision and structure. As a Fellow of the Indian Water Resources Society and the Indian Society of Hydrologists, I’m constantly surrounded by scientific thoughts. That discipline reflects in my writing. I never promote shortcuts or speculation. My books encourage self-study, research, and calculated decisions.

Q: Speaking of books—22 is a staggering number. What drives this productivity?

Er. Sahu: I don’t write for popularity. I write for purpose. Financial literacy is still alarmingly low, especially among young Indians. I want to create awareness that is simple, actionable, and grounded in reality. Each book tackles a different aspect of trading—from psychology to technical setups, money management to positional trading. It’s my way of contributing to the financial well-being of the next generation. I have written two books about Mythology, Literature & World Events; which are treasure of information from mythology to science to history.

Q: Awards and recognition seem to follow you everywhere. From the Rashtriya Gaurav Samman to the International Grandeur Award—you’ve been honored multiple times. What do these recognitions mean to you?

Er. Sahu: They are humbling. But I don’t measure success in awards. For me, the real reward is when a young reader writes to me saying, “Your book saved me from a bad investment,” or “I finally understood how to protect my capital.” That’s what keeps me going. The recognitions are just encouragement to keep doing what I love. Receiving awards at the National & International platform is not just an honour; it is a reminder to educate, elevate, & inculcate the values to the society we belongs.

Q: You have a string of upcoming honors too—Global Icon Award, Author Excellence Award in Dubai, and several more. Are these events important milestones?

Er. Sahu: Absolutely. They offer visibility, but more importantly, they open doors for dialogue. I plan to use these platforms to emphasize the importance of financial discipline, especially among Indian youth. We are a country of brilliant minds, but many still fall prey to stock market speculation without adequate education. That has to change.

Q: What’s the most common mistake you see new investors make?

Er. Sahu: Overconfidence. They jump into the market without preparation, influenced by tips or social media hype. They don’t use stop-loss. They don’t track fundamentals. And most importantly, they don’t have an exit plan. I always tell readers—read books, not headlines. Do your own research. Relying on someone else’s tip is like driving blindfolded.

Q: For those just starting out, which of your books should they begin with?

Er. Sahu: I would suggest starting with the basics—understanding market cycles, risk-reward ratios, and investor psychology. These foundations are covered in detail in my earlier books "The Kernel of Stock Market Investing" & "The Compilations of Options Strategy" available on Amazon.com and Amazon.in. Once the basics are clear, they can move to my advanced works on technical analysis and portfolio management. My books Reading is free in kindle unlimited.

Q: What’s next for Er. Sahu—any upcoming book projects or financial initiatives?

Er. Sahu: Yes, several. I’m currently working on a special edition focused on behavioral finance—how emotions affect trading decisions. I’m also mentoring a few young writers who wish to blend technical careers with finance. My goal is to create a community where engineering minds can also become financially literate, and financially wise. My 23rd book is about Breakout & Retest Strategy.

Q: Finally, what’s your advice to the youth of India?

Er. Sahu: Discipline is everything. Whether you're building a dam or a portfolio, structure matters. Don’t chase hype. Don’t be emotional. Learn, unlearn, relearn. Financial freedom doesn’t come from earning alone, but from managing and growing your wealth wisely. The earlier you start learning, the farther you’ll go.
